Looking for ways to meet more neighbors, network with other Central Vermonters, and help people in need in your community and around the world?  Consider the Rotary Club of Northfield!

Through Rotary you can be a part of a global organization committed to world peace, working toward the goal of one community at a time.  Rotary International has been a driving force in the eradication of polio and now is working to alleviate other pressing issues in the poorest regions of the world.

The Northfield Rotary Club's Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Dinner was a great success!  Over 150 people attended an evening that included a wonderful turkey dinner, door prizes, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and enjoyed the wonderful entertainment of Sherri Lamberton of Sherri's Jubilee.  We sang songs, some of us danced, and some received autographed copies of Sherri's latest CD!  And we could not have done it without the help of Norwich Rotaract students, Northfield High School S.H.I.N.E students (Students Helping to Increase Northfield Enthusiasm), the many volunteers who cooked, served and cleaned and the local merchants who donated many of the items.  It was truly a community evening!

The club's First Annual Pie for Brunch combined with presenting our annual community grant awards, community recognition awards, and the club's Paul Harris award was a huge success!  The club members would like to thank all of those who contributed pies, ate pies, bought pies or supported this event in any way.  We look forward to making this an annual event!

On October 30, Peter Youngbaer, the Executive Director of the People’s Health and Wellness Clinic and also a navigator for Vermont’s new health insurance exchange spoke to the Club about health care needs in the county and the challenges of getting on-line with the new Vermont Health Connect.

He outlined some of the basics about Vermont Health Connect to the Rotary. It will only affect about one in six Vermonters: those who are currently uninsured, self-insured, or getting insurance from a small employer (50 or fewer employees.)

Youngbaer said that the People’s Health and Wellness Clinic has trained staff available as navigators to help both individuals and small businesses determine their options, and to help them sign up on the internet.  Appointments can be made by calling 479-1229.

Because of internet problems, Governor Peter Shumlin recently postponed the deadline for signing up until March 31, 2014. Current insurance policies that expire at the end of December can be extended until then.

Raluca Danci from Romania is among the 13 students currently in the midst of their year-long youth exchange year here in District 7850.  Raluca recently presented a full program to the Northfield Rotary Club, featuring a PowerPoint presentation and video highlighting her hometown, as well as items from her country to exhibit.  What made the evening especially fun was that her first host family, current host family and future host families were all present and helped to surprise her with a birthday cake to celebrate her upcoming 18th birthday!  Her presentation was a fantastic demonstration of what we strive to achieve with the Youth Exchange program – cross-cultural understanding, sharing of experiences and a complete immersion into a new community.  Raluca is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Central Vermont.
